About Davis County
Davis County, Utah, located near Salt Lake City, is the third most populous county in Utah with a population of over 300,000. Created in 1850, Davis County grew slowly but began to flourish in the 1950s and 1960s, in large measure due to the establishment of the local Hill Air Force Base in the northern part of the county.
Geographically, Davis County is located between the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountain Range. The landscape includes marshlands in addition to mountain ranges, and there is a diverse wildlife population that includes sheep and bison.
Davis County is predominantly (over 90%) White, and over 70% of the residents are practicing Mormons. Davis County is often considered a bedroom community for Salt Lake City, with over 40% of the population working outside of the county proper. The median household income in Davis County is currently just below $70,000.
Architecturally, Davis County offers several distinctive buildings. For example, William Allen designed the Davis County Courthouse in 1889 in a gothic style. A 1929 expansion of the courthouse employed a neo-classical design featuring Greek columns. There are over 50 Davis County buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Lagoon Carousel and Roller Coaster, the Farmer’s Union Building, and a number of private residences. Typical residential constructions are brick homes in Queen Anne and ranch styles.
