About Frederick County
The largest county in Maryland, Frederick is located in the northern part of the state and has over 240,000 residents. The county was created in 1748, but had its boundaries redrawn in both the 1700s and 1800s in order to arrive at its present day parameters.
The big increase in Frederick County’s population in recent years has included an increase in racial diversity, though the county remains over 81% white. Frederick is the county seat, with other important cities and towns including Brunswick, Emmitsburg, and New Market. Catoctin National Park is a nationally protected area within the county, which lies between the Piedmont Plateau and the Appalachian Mountains.
