About Chesterfield County

Settled by English explorers as early as 1607, Chesterfield County, Virginia was founded on May 25, 1749 by the Virginia House of Burgesses. It was named for Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield. Located near the state capital of Richmond in the Commonwealth of Virginia, northern parts of the county are referred to as Richmond’s “South Side.”

It has been said that residents of Chesterfield County have learned how to enjoy all four seasons of the year — from extreme heat in the summer to bitter cold in the winter, with two formidable rainy seasons in between. Actually, Chesterfield County gets an average of 44 inches of rain per year, while the average for the remainder of the U.S. is 37 inches. July highs range in the high 80s, and January lows range in the upper 20s.

Approximately 325,000 people call Chesterfield County home, making it the third-most populous county in Virginia. Median family income is just under $73,000. Major cities and towns in Chesterfield County include: Bon Air, Manchester, Midlothian, Rockwood, Brandermill, Woodlake, Moseley, Chesterfield, Meadowbrook, Bensley, Bellwood, Chester, Ettrick, Enon, and Matoaca.

Chesterfield County is also home to the Eppington Plantation, built in 1770 by Francis Eppes IV. Eppes’ brother-in-law was Thomas Jefferson, a frequent visitor to the plantation. Other landmarks include Falling Creek Ironworks Park, the first ironworks in English North America; Henricus Historical Park, where the American dream of success and self-reliance began; and Midlothian Mines & Rail Road Park, from which came the first commercially mined coal in America.

Home styles vary in Chesterfield County. Most are well-built, with quality materials, and more than 25 years old. In fact, 34% of Chesterfield single-family houses were built before 1971. Approximately 46% of Chesterfield’s mid-century houses are Ranch Style, 18% are Colonial Revival, 14% are Split-Level/Foyer style, 11% are Minimal Traditional, and 11% are Cape Cod. This is an area that is steeped in tradition but recognizes the need for modernization.
